The Craft — Handloom Ikat
Ikat is one of India's most distinctive resist-dyeing and weaving traditions. Unlike a printed fabric, the design is created by carefully resist-dyeing the yarns before they are woven. The dyed warp and/or weft threads are then aligned on the handloom to form the final pattern.
The slight softness, irregularity and feathered edges characteristic of Ikat are a natural result of this meticulous process. Every motif requires precision, patience and the skilled eye of the weaver.
What looks like a beautiful blur is actually hundreds of carefully aligned threads coming together on a handloom.
